Athletic / Community Center

Willets Point, New York, New York USA

Juxtaposing disparate functions of a community and recreation center to foster provisional heterotopias--spaces apart from themselves--as a mechanism to critique fitness and body culture.

The project embodies two cliches of architecture reviews: the autonomous object within an urban context, and the literal translation of the diagram. The object’s form takes the shape of a simple diagram: the extrusion of the largest program, an indoor track. This massing strategy frees the site for future development and projects an autonomous figure--paradoxically indifferent and deferential to its context. The seemingly simple strategy belies the complex spatial conditions and socio-psychic relationships within. Provisional heterotopias are created by juxtaposing different spatial conditions, programs, and users, via reflections, transparencies, and sectional views. An architectural object more akin to an optical instrument, the spaces within incite a self conscious awareness of the way we relate to each other, ourselves, and our bodies.
